Statement by Krista Jones Baptista, Executive Director of Data2X, on the United States Strategy on Global Women’s Economic Security:
“Data2X applauds the United States government for its first interagency strategy to advance women’s economic security globally. The Strategy, published on January 5, 2023, aims to overcome barriers that prevent the full economic participation of women and girls worldwide—regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, race, religion, and socio-economic status.
Crucially, the Strategy serves as the Biden-Harris Administration’s strongest statement yet of a commitment to data-driven gender policymaking by elevating the importance of gender data collection, analysis, and use as a core guiding principle of economic security. Data2X commends the Administration for its leadership and for recognizing gender data as a key enabler of effective policy interventions supporting women’s economic security. Equally welcome is the Administration’s pledge to advocate for intersectional methods of gender data collection and analysis worldwide—and to increase the capacities of national statistical offices to close existing data gaps.
Building upon the administration’s National Strategy on Gender Equity and Equality, the Strategy highlights the role of crises in the rise in global economic insecurity faced by women, girls, and gender-diverse people. As we look toward the mitigation and stabilization of these crises in 2023 and beyond, we must indeed come together as global stakeholders to solve these problems with effective, data-driven policies that consider the diverse experiences and backgrounds of citizens.
As we head into the critical midpoint review of the Sustainable Development Goals, Data2X is encouraged to see the United States prioritizing economic security by relying on, and championing, gender data to reach its goals and drive progress for women, girls, and gender-diverse people worldwide.”
