Using ProPublica’s Lost Mothers, a dashboard of stories of maternal mortality in the US
Media organizations play a huge role in humanizing data to the general public. In order to raise awareness of the high maternal mortality rates in the United States, ProPublica and NPR developed a dashboard of stories of mothers who lost their lives during childbirth. In 2016, NPR and ProPublica identified 134 pregnancy- and childbirth-related deaths out of an estimated U.S. total of 700 to 900.
