Using open data to understand femicides
Civil society organizations can play the role as a “watchdog” in assessing the quality of gender-based violence data– including data on femicide. In Brazil, Article 19 investigated open data to understand the state and quality of femicide data. Recommendations from the research include the establishment of a publicly funded and sustained national database that collects data on all forms of violence, including homicide; the development of a centralized system that gathers data from all government institutions; and the development of a national femicide database that is regularly updated.
