The Gender Dimensions of Birth Registration in Sub-Saharan Africa: What Can the Data Tell Us?

Topic: Civil Registration & Vital Statistics
Type: Report
Author: data, Gayatri Koolwal Date: September 2016

Birth registration is one of the most important channels to establishing proof of identity, yet registration rates continue to be low across many regions, including Africa.

Using the 2008-2014 DHS surveys in Africa, as well as Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys (MICS), The Gender Dimensions of Birth Registration in Sub-Saharan Africa: What Can the Data Tell Us? looks at how gaps in birth registration interact with gender.

The report also discusses the need for additional survey data to understand the low levels of birth registration for girls and boys and the constraints that parents face in registering their children, all with the goal of improving policies and facilitating the registration process.
