This report lays out a foundational mapping of gender data gaps to guide development policy and advance gender equality and women’s empowerment.

Mapping Gender Data Gaps examines five domains of women’s empowerment–health, education, economic opportunities, political participation, and human security–and lays out the gaps in gender data in developing countries across these domains.

The report also suggests ways forward to close these gaps using existing and new data sources, including censuses and micro-level surveys, service and administrative records, and the potential use of ‘big data’ as a new source of gender data.

Data2X updated this work in 2019 with the report, Bridging the Gap: Mapping Gender Data Availability in Africa, and in 2020 with the report, Mapping Gender Data Gaps: An SDG Era Update.
