CRVS systems are foundational for both gender equality and data equality.

Civil registration and vital statistics (CRVS) systems record statistics about life events, such as births, deaths, marriages, and divorces. This brief explains why CRVS systems are important for all people, but particularly beneficial to women and girls.

Despite the many benefits of strong CRVS systems, more than 100 developing countries do not have functioning systems that can support complete registration of key life events or collect critical administrative data.
