2019 Annual Trends and Outlook Report: Gender Equality in Rural Africa: From Commitments to Outcomes

Topic: Sustainable Development Goals
Type: Report
Author: International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) Date: December 2019

How will we transform our agriculture and food system to better serve women?

The Malabo Declaration of 2014 aims to enhance livelihoods through inclusive growth in Africa’s agricultural sector. This report applies a gender lens to several issues that must be addressed to fully achieve the goals outlined by the Malabo Declaration. It examines the intersections between gender and:

  • the context and institutions within which rural people operate;
  • the natural resources that they depend on for agriculture, sources of vulnerability, and resilience to shocks;
  • assets and;
  • livelihood strategies.

The report, facilitated by IFPRI, features chapter contributions from a variety of experts including Data2X’s Eleanor Carey and Mayra Buvinic who wrote “The Promise and Challenges of Gender Data”.
